Title

"Shining a light into the deep, dark subsurface"

Abstract

Today we know that there is a vast number of microorganisms up to several kilometers below the earth's surface. Despite a lack of food and energy sources, the microorganisms present are predominantly alive and actively growing. Water-filled cracks in the bedrock make a very interesting environment in the deep biosphere, but due to the lack of food and energy sources, it is likely that microbes in this environment have a strategy where they alternate between resting and growing due to the long periods of starvation. In this presentation, I will shine a light into the deep to discuss the microorganism present, how they got there, and how they survive.
